Energy Services Technician I

Community Action Opportunities is seeking an Energy Service Technician I to perform residential energy-efficiency and health/safety work on homes in the agency’s eight-county service area. 

Requires

  • High school diploma of GED
  • North Carolina Driver License
  • Ability to travel throughout eight-county service area
  • Capacity to perform heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally

Additional Requirements

  • Obtain Lead Renovator certification and complete OSHA 10-hour training within first three months of employment

Head Start/NC Pre-K Teacher Assistant

We are a high-performing, non-profit Community Action Agency seeking dedicated and experienced early childhood education teaching professional to join our strong team in a high quality education team.

 Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Helps with individual and group teaching activities of preschool-age children in a classroom; sets up learning centers, and arranges daily activities.
  • Discusses and makes suggestions about weekly lesson plans.
  • Prepares and selects activities for at least, one developmentally appropriate lesson plan
  • outline a month to coordinate with the Teacher’s plan and supports weekly individual and group objectives.
  • Helps to administer the developmental screening instrument, observes and coordinates assessment activities and records behaviorally-based observations and other data.
  • Helps to maintain and process accurate and confidential records and statistics as required.
  • Communicates appropriately with parents, shares information about the child’s needs and progress, potential health, dental, etc. concerns and makes referrals for services.
  • Instructs and helps children, including those who have special needs, with daily activities including proper eating manners, toileting, hand washing, teeth brushing, toileting, etc.
  • Sets and cleans up food service area while creating related and appropriate learning opportunities for the children.
  • Cleans tables and floors after lunch; may vacuum and clean floors, carpets, wipes furniture. May also be required to clean bathroom sinks and toilets in a Head Start classroom.
  • May be required to drives and/or serve as a monitor on a bus that transports children to and from school, on field trips and/or to screening appointments.
  • Helps to resolve child emergencies in the classroom; follows appropriate notification procedures.

Requires:

  • Minimum of two years’ early childhood education experience
  • CDA Credential
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have valid NC Driver License
  • NC DOT Issued CDL desired or ability to obtain NC DOT CDL within one year of hire
  • Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
  • Must pass pre-employment background and drug screens

Disabilities Services Assistant

We are a state and federal funded anti-poverty, non-profit agency recruiting a Disabilities Services Assistant.  This position is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of services that support the planning, administration and ongoing assessment of services and partnerships in the areas of disabilities services for children.

Work also requires coordinating services with community agencies, service providers and other program employees.  Work requires an understanding of the Head Start Program Performance Standards and 1302 Subpart F Services to Children with Disabilities, teamwork, Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning Pyramid Model framework, organizational skills, and strong oral and written communication skills. 

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Health & Disabilities Services Program Manager.  Work is evaluated through observation, discussion, auditing and monitoring results, goal-achievement and Significant Incidents that demonstrate job quality, quantity, timeliness and results.  Work is formally reviewed, and future goals are set, during an annual performance appraisal.

Requires

  • Associate’s degree in Social Work, Early Childhood or related field
  • Two years of experience working in a preschool program with children with disabilities
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Special Requirements:

  • Valid NC Driver’s License
  • Must pass a physical examination and TB Test
  • Must obtain and maintain CRC Letter of Qualification for NC DCDEE

Self-Sufficiency Program Assistant

We are a high-performing, non-profit Community Action Agency looking for a detail-oriented human services professional to assist with operations of our self-sufficiency programming across our six-county service area. This position is a 35 hour per week full-time opportunity and will include a full benefits package.

The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Significant knowledge of the causes and conditions of poverty and experience with assessment practices in working with families
  • Positively engage with the public on an on-going basis, respond to inquiries about the program and manage wait lists
  • Successfully manage a variety of competing tasks on tight deadlines with strong attention to detail
  • Conduct screening activities and intake assessments using agency and community resources and strength-based approaches
  • Engage in community outreach across all program areas served and build relationships with other organizations
  • Collect, analyze, maintain and protect confidential and required electronic and hard copy financial and personal customer data and records and program documentation
  • Enter high volumes of technical data into program-specific databases
  • Provide general support for and assist with the execution of classes and program meetings across all service areas  
  • Assist Self-Sufficiency Program Manager with daily operations and additional tasks as needed;

Requires:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate’s Degree preferred

Facility Service Associate

We are a high-performing, non-profit Community Action Agency looking seeking a full-time Facilities Services Associate to help clean, repair and maintain the Agency’s fleet and facilities.

The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Perform general cleaning duties in private offices, common areas and other Agency sites and spaces including washing walls; sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and buffing floors; dusting; vacuuming and cleaning carpet; washing windows, office doors and other interior and exterior glass; wet-wiping window sills; dusting blinds; dusting/washing light fixtures and replacing bulbs and ballasts; wiping tables in training/break and conference rooms; filing tissue and paper towel dispensers; and collecting trash
  • Perform grounds maintenance including cleaning storm drain grates, collecting and transporting garbage; removing snow from entrances, walkways and parking lots and scattering salt; washing sidewalks to remove salt
  • Make small repairs (e.g., spackling) and paints walls.
  • Ensure the security of and maintains adequate stock of supplies, cleaning products, tools and equipment
  • Research and recommend cost-effective options for cleaning products, tools and equipment;
  • Perform special tasks including cleaning window blinds and gutters, painting and using hand power tools and equipment to execute semi-skilled carpentry

Requires:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prefer some college-level course work in facility maintenance, or at least five years of experience in commercial facility cleaning, maintenance and repair
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver License
  • Valid North Carolina Passenger CDL desired or the ability to acquire one
  • Must be able to pass a “no communicable diseases” assessment and a physical
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background and drug screenings

Health Services Assistant

Seeking Health Services Assistant to perform work to ensure that Head Start children receive required screenings and their families receive the individualized plan, support and services they need to be ready for school.

Responsibilities:

  • Advocates for children and parents with community agencies, assists parents in understanding services, accessing services effectively and asking the right questions
  • Assists in emergency situations, makes quick decisions, provides support to teachers, parents and children and ensures appropriate follow through for medical care
  • Coordinates and supports health screenings, performs height and weight screenings
  • Makes referrals and schedules appointments with doctors, dentists, mental health professionals and local health departments for screening, assessments and treatment, notifies parents and arranges for transportation, facilitates parent and provider contacts.
  • Recruits dental providers to perform screening, examinations and treatment, evaluates referrals and prioritizes treatment.
  • Obtains and maintains confidential permission and release of information forms, distributes forms to appropriate staff, agencies and service providers, obtains documentation and reports from screening and treatment services, maintains record keeping system, transfers health records at end of the school year to public schools as requested
  • Tracks and updates immunization records and food sensitivities and allergies

Requirements:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of child development, childhood illnesses, dental and nutritional needs and health related terminology
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources and accessibility requirements
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and industry-specific database software
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals and as a responsible team member
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other employees, community professionals and agency customers

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data and statistics, work with accounting processes, operate a computer terminal and read extensively

Special Requirements:

  • Valid CRC Letter of Qualification from DCDEE
  • Valid NC Driver’s License
  • Ability to pass physical, TB, background and drug screenings

Desirable Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in Social Work, Early Childhood or health care or education, arts or sciences

Family Service Associate (FSA)
Family Service Associate Interpreter (FSA-I)

Seeking a FSA to help serve our communities by assisting our customers.  Work will be performed by phone or in person and may require Spanish speaking abilities. You will be gathering relevant information, contacting and making referrals to other agencies and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates family integration into all aspects of the child’s development and school-readiness needs and activities.
  • Assesses family needs and strengths and helps them to develop and reach short- and long-term family and self-sufficiency goals.
  • Conducts customer application activities; determines applicant eligibility, establishes and tracks customer waiting list.
  • Collaborates with internal program and external community resources to develop family referral and support options.
  • Advocates for families, to help them meet crisis needs and long-term goals.
  • Provides transportation for parents or children to appointments as needed

Requirements:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories and related terminology, practices and techniques of family and child development, family dynamics and needs of pre-school children, including those with disabilities. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of family assessment processes and intervention techniques.
  • General knowledge of Head Start Program Performance Standards, relevant Federal, State and local regulations and Agency policies and procedures. 
  • Speak, read, and write fluently in English and Spanish is preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to, physically, perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

HR Manager
We are an anti-poverty agency looking for a seasoned, professional HR professional to be our HR Manager.  Along with a personnel analyst, this hands-on position supports the HR needs of 130 FTEs.

Our HR Manager ensures that we comply with relevant employment law is responsible for HR-related policies, programs and systems including but not limited to job analysis, pay and classification, recruitment, screening and selection, employee benefits and electronic and hardcopy HR records.  The HR Manager must also know and apply federal and state HR laws and regulations, be able to communicate clearly, exercise sound judgment, meet repeated deadlines, work on teams, facilitate small groups, demonstrate best-practice supervision and counsel others on lawful employment and behaviorally-based discipline practices. 

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in HR Management, Public Administration or Business Administration with an emphasis in HR, or a related field
  • Minimum of eight (8) years as an assistant or HR Manager/Director in a small public or medium-sized non-profit organization
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience and SHRM-SCP also required.
